Some of these programs include shaded relief maps and
some can even generate 3-D views of the terrain and terrain profiles along
any path the user defines. Some provide scans of the most detailed
maps available - the USGS 7½' Topographic 1:24,000 scale Quad maps.
Most provide interfaces for use with GPS receivers to upload and download
tracks, waypoints, routes and to provide real time tracking on a notebook
computer with a GPS attached. One can even upload topographic
mapping data into compatible Garmin GPS receivers. All allow
measurement of distances and bearings while some also allow measurement of
areas. All provide a find or search function that will find place
names, feature names and latitude, longitude coordinates while some can
also locate streets and map names. Most provide automatic map
seaming so that adjacent map sheets are automatically seamed together and
displayed on the computer screen as one continuous map. Most provide
for adding annotations like text and symbols while some also allow
addition of polygons, circles and highlighting. Most provide a
variety of print and export formats while one allows export of complete
USGS 7½' Topographic 1:24,000 scale Quad maps in TFW worldfile format for
